Indeed, you can probably guess what this post entails by the title. Now, mind you, I started work on July 17th & worked for both that Wednesday and Thursday (July 18th). Those two days were, I was told, tryouts for the most part. Then I was called by the practice manager that Saturday (July 20th) and told that I was to be a permanent worker and that I could come in right that next Monday (July 22nd). Since then, I had worked for two weeks, until Friday, August 2nd.
Keep that in mind, kiddies: I had worked for two weeks and two days when this conversation happened. We'll call the practice manager (the lady I spoke with on the phone) 'Jane'. By the way, 'Nicole' never liked me. Observe:
Me: *sighs as I finish another phone call at exactly 6:01pm. Cleans up my area and hangs up the phone. Goes to find Jane, to see if there's anything else to do* "Jane, do you need anything else for the day?"
Jane: *gets a strange look in her eyes and gestures for me to follow her* "Uhh...yeah. Actually can we talk? Here, let's go in this room..." *lowers her voice and leads me to one of the seldom-used exam rooms*
Me: *heart pounds as I follow her and wonder what in the hell I've done so wrong and stumbles a little into the room after her* "Yes ma'am?"
Jane: *winces as she looks at me, closing the door tight* "Amarie...I've been bad. Really, really bad. I owe you an apology. Really."
Me: *caught off guard and blinks* "Y-you do? Huh???"
Jane: *takes a deep breath and gets that You Poor Thing Face* "...I don't think this is going to work."
Me: *blinks slowly and can't form words*
Jane: *sighs and gets even more of that You Poor Thing Face* "Yeah, I don't think this is going to work well. You see, it's not you. It's just that we hired you thinking that Nicole would be able to leave, but she hasn't. Plus, you also know that we're having to fill another position, with an LPN, too.
So, long story short...you read that correctly. I have been let go-as of last Friday-because the girl that I was supposed to replace wasn't going to leave. Because she couldn't find another job.
Because that was the Jane's-the practice manager-problem.
Because that was my problem.
And now I am jobless after searching for a job since May. I am also without the means to get a car as well as the means to continue my schooling without having to tax my mother and sister with having to pick me up and drop me off. I am, most obviously, without a steady monetary income (though, of course, Jane will send me my 80-week check in the mail soon).
My mother and sister know. I have also contacted my teacher/program director at my school to let her know. The least of what she's said is "that's extremely unprofessional" and "I've just...never heard of that before". She is none-too-pleased with the practice But she will definitely call me when there is another job opening and I'll need to keep my head up, soldier on, and continue to do well in school to finish up my associates.
And I want to be clear: I'm disheartened, but I'm not angry and/or crushed. To be brutally honest, I had been deeply bored and dissatisfied with the job from my third day there. In summary, it was mostly looking at a piece of paper, finding out what to do with it, and phones.
Paper and phones. At a desk that wasn't mine.
So, it wasn't the right practice for me in the first place. I was already counting the minutes down and thinking about the next place that I wanted to be within the first three days.
I also want to be clear about this: I'm not sure if I was let go because I'm black. Sure one of the girls that left (one week after my interview) was black. But one of the employees that had been there for years is black, as well. That, and I didn't get any of those kind of vibes that I was unwelcome-it was really only Nicole that couldn't stand me and I now know why.
But then, I was only there for two weeks and two days...so there very well could've been more for me to pick up atmosphere-wise.
*sigh* So, yes, dearest readers. Your Amarie is jobless yet again. What's new with you guys, though? : /
