I think you can make the case that, in Anakin's case, it was the case of Palpatine being a bad teacher and focusing on hate.
The Jedi are, both in their creed and in how they show in the movies, afraid of emotion (and, probably completely unaware of the irony, there). It makes sense that, when they talk about emotion and passion, they discuss the more obviously frightening ones.
