I can't wait to see what you'll make of the next episode! :D Especially since it (if I remember right) concerns itself with Admiral Zhao, the shipyard and the confrontation that ensues. :) Also with poor Aang and the Southern Air temple. :'<
But yeah poor Aang because it does suck to be him when he just wants to be a child and have fun. :( His whole childhood was robbed and he knows it! Poor Zuko as well because he never HAD the chance even with his mom there because his father was absolutely horrible! >_< This series just underscores in all of its main characters (as well as many secondary and tertiary characters) the importance of having a loving, supportive, and fun childhood. :3 Because even Sokka and Katara were forced to grow early and out of it before they may have been ready. :/ And that's where those two are coming from when they don't understand Aang's insistence on having fun. They don't understand WHY it is so important to healthy child development (Hell, one could argue this society also doesn't understand that importance, and even LESS so for those who are minorities. x_=) So it's already setting the stage for the future clashing and misunderstandings between Aang, with Sokka and Katara. (Luckily, the latter two come around and have fun at times too. :3 <3 )
Anyways I grew up with this franchise and always saw Aang as demonstrating the need for a happy, healthy, loving, and supportive childhood and was so for that since even when I was young, I got the sense that my dad never had that for himself (his parents were abusive but more subtly so than Ozai, and yet still just as damaging in their own way) but since my mom had a good childhood and knew what that was like, she was very insistent on my dad never breathing a WORD about his past or family dynamics and taking the lead to ensure that his childhood would not repeat itself, but that her childhood would, when it came to me. I'm very thankful for her for many things today! So thanks to that, I can definitely appreciate the importance of such a childhood for EVERYBODY, and grieve all the more when I see people who are denied it for one reason or another. :(
Ironically, Zuko fascinated me growing up because I saw the similarity in him to my dad... Hell one of my story ideas IS based on an abused boy who gets away from his abusive family and then must challenge his parents later on and survive the resulting complications and even battles. I was interested in that because I knew even when young, that my situation was not what others had, and wanted to know HOW and WHY did it get so messed up for other kids. Also to understand what my dad went through, what effect it has on him still, and how one can live, grow, learn and change from that, to claim a healthier life for oneself, regardless of the fact that you may not have had that demonstrated while growing up by your parents in the least bit. I've found that [and continue to find it] extremely inspiring so that was one of the biggest reasons I've been drawn to Zuko over Aang for a long while there.
However, with your analysis, I can start to like Aang even more especially for what he represents. :)
Last bit is I ADORE the scenery porn in this series. X3 <3 All the art is just OMFG AAAHHHHHH YEAAAASSSSS <3333 To me it's the perfect blend of Western and Eastern animation and tropes and artwork and styles. X3 <3 And Sokka's sarcasm and puns are always refreshing and hilarious. ;D
I never considered until reading your analysis that this is KATARA'S story. Now that I've read that, I cannot stop seeing it. >U<~ It just makes it ALL the MORE AWESOME. >u<~ Total fave!!! <333
I cannot wait to see a new analysis come up. OuO Lay it on me sistah! >.<~ I is ready. OuO)b
