Aang is out of his place and time, and [nearly] everyone he's ever known is dead. So he needs friends, and he needs to learn waterbending, and learning alongside someone else is more fun! Especially since Aang is such a socially-oriented person - which makes it even sadder when he becomes withdrawn and solitary later on in the story.
So it suits Aang's purposes very well to take Katara to the Northern Water Tribe... but it really looks like he's thinking of her happiness and development just as much as he's thinking of himself, saving the world, etc. I'm so happy that the story focuses on HER needs equally!
(Learning alongside Aang is NOT always fun for Katara, and boy do I identify with that...)
