Job Interview & Anxiety
Friday, July 5th, 2013 10:54 amI think I just let a job slip through my fingers, dearest friends. Observe the phone conversation paraphrasing exchange:
Me: Hello there! I understand that you've been trying to contact me!And I didn't answer the phone because I wondered who in the hell calls someone for a potential job at 8:00pm
Lady: Yes, I also emailed you. And your phone doesn't have a message box.
Me: Yes, I apologize for that. But I'm glad we caught up to each other now!Is currently berating self for not including home phone, too, in resume
Lady: Alright. Let's see...can you come in...at 6:30pm?
Me: *thinks about mom having to take off work and blurts out* Well, actually...mornings work better for me. *trembling like a mouse*
Lady: Okay, look. We work that late EVERY night-until 7:00, sometimes. So if you can't be available for that time right now, then how could you be available ever if you got the job? Do you see what I'm saying? *is about to hang up...*
Me: *thinks quickly* Oh, I absolutely understand what you're saying. If 6:30pm is the best time, then I can make arrangements to see you if that's the only time. I simply have something else to take care of, but it should be resolved quite soon.
Lady: ...What's holding you back now that won't hold you back later?
Me: *thinks quickly again* I'm currently taking care of my mother after she's had surgery and it's during the evenings. (Yeah, it's a half-lie; my mom is actually alright after surgery, but I'm still apprehensive to leave her so late in the day. I'm desperate at this point.)
Lady: *doesn't say anything for a long, long, long, long, loooooooooooong time*
Me: Ma'am, are you still there?
Lady: Hm? Oh, yeah! I'm just thinking. Let me see...hold on for a minute. *mutters under breath* This week is so hectic...
Me: *waits on hold while Anxiety Shoots Through Roof and I seriously consider starting smoking right then and there* x.X
Lady: Okay, here's the thing. I can do...next Thursday at 12:00pm. How's that?
Me: Oh, that works perfectly! *wonders how much a pack of Marlboro goes these days*
Lady: But I WILL call if I have to cancel.
Me: I understand and I understand your address is blah-blah-blah?
Lady: Yes, we're located at blah-blah-blah.
Me: Alright, I will be there. You have a wonderful day, ma'am!
Lady: Yeah, thanks. You too. Buh bye.

Date: 2013-07-08 11:40 pm (UTC)I know I overreacted (seriously, I could've done much worse and she won't really know me unless and until the interview happens and my first week of working there begins...or at least, so my mom says) and I'm just a nervous/anxietic wreck. I've literally had my phone next to me all day in case she *does* call and cancel. *gulps*
And I didn't know you had kids! Surely the employer didn't judge you, right?! :O
