Deepest Holiday Thanks to a Friend
Monday, December 23rd, 2013 04:32 pmI know it may be very, very bad manners to talk about gifts given or not given...
But one of my best friends ever surprised my mother and me with a brand new Christmas tree. We have not had a Christmas tree in years. We haven't been able to afford one, hadn't had the energy/time to put up one, and it has always been a bit of a great source of sadness for my mother, though she never really admitted it.
Yesterday, however, my friend called me in the evening and just asked me what kind of tree my mother would like-white with no lights, or white without lights? She steamrolled over any of my protests and, well...it was one of those gifts that you Weren't Allowed To Refuse.
We both had a marvelous, kooky-silly-funny time putting the tree together in my room while trying to get my mom not to suspect anything (she managed to glance in there anyway, somehow and she'd already seen my friend carrying the box in through the window...the woman is Scary Clever). But it was a hell of a lot of fun trying to maneuver and get my mom not to look and/or guess at what we were doing. I think, in the end when we finally did manage to get the tree up with its lights and our angel on top, we did surprise her. Because she'd long-since been relegated to the fact that Christmas Trees Are Only For People That Don't Have To Work On Holidays.
She cried and hugged us both after psuedo-threatening to give us spankings and playfully reprimanded us. I think that seeing her cry happy tears was the most gratifying part of it. And our Christmas tree is beautiful. It's beautiful because it gives a warm light to our home, but most of all, it's beautiful because a friend gave it in love and care and a genuine desire to give a gift to my mother and me.
So thank you so, so so, so much to my friend and...
...I swear that I'm going to get my cat to stop trying to climb it. ;)
