Announcing ATLA Deconstruction!
Sunday, June 1st, 2014 02:07 pmOkay, okay. I know. I know I completely had to stop that Fifty Shades of Grey deconstruction because my friend still has that book I spent money on…and frankly, I don’t want it back.
But I do still have the first two seasons of Avatar: The Last Airbender on DVD. And those are so not going out of my possession any time soon. The truth is that I’ve wanted to do a series of deconstructions on ATLA for quite a while now. The problem was that there is just so much to say. So much to pick apart, so much to go Whoop! Whoop! about and just a little bit to frown upon (though maybe more than a ‘little bit’ when I get to looking at it more closely).
To give you guys some backgrounds on what ATLA is? It’s mostly Pure Awesome Sauce. To quote the Wikipedia page who can say it better than I can:
Sounds like a lot of win, yes? Absolutely. This series is made entirely of people of color and it was created by two white guys that have given the entertainment industry a shining example of showing people of color and people of color’s cultures sans fetishizing, culturally appropriating, and overall reduction of entire peoples to a collection of semi-uncomfortable facts, stereotypes, objects, and traditions for a white person to squint at. No, Brian & Mike (Bryke, to us fans) steered well-clear of those problematic tropes and patterns and that’ll be another post for another day.
I will tell you that because there’s so much to say, it’ll take several posts just to get through one episode. But I hope that we’ll all have fun in the meantime and I can’t wait for this to kick off! *SQUEE!*
So, dears! Look forward to beginning posts on ATLA!

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Avatar: The Legend of Aang in some regions) is an American television series that aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. Avatar: The Last Airbender is set in an Asian influenced world wherein some are able to manipulate the classical elements by use of psychokinetic variants of Chinese martial arts known as "bending". The show combined the styles of anime and American cartoons, and relied on the imagery of various East Asian, Inuit, Southeast Asian, South Asian and New World societies. Due to this style, the series regularly enters the conversation regarding its consideration as an anime work.
The series follows the adventures of protagonist twelve-year-old Aang and his friends, who must bring peace and unity to the world by ending the Fire Lord's war against the other three nations.
