OMG.

So, like, Silver & Wingedbeast have started a very, very long conversation over at my last ATLA post ("On Rape and Empathy"). They've mostly started talking about Mako both as a character and as his position as a potential polyshipper with Korra & Asami.

It's...amazing. I usually don't get such long conversations like that in my comments! Hah! And I've had other people inbox me about LoK, too. So...

Here's my first-ever open thread for you guys. I know it's late, as the finale was quite some time ago. I also know that I'm not the best person to participate myself, as I stopped watching in the middle of Book 2 (I know, but the bullshit was getting to be staggering for me). But! I know a lot of my readers have finished watching LoK and have a lot of thoughts on it. And you guys have a lot of thoughts on ATLA, and it's okay to share those too!

...But do not scorn Zuko's hair. I will destroy you with my homemade pancakes & bacon. I mean it. I got my mother addicted to that kind of breakfast and I'll do it to you through a computer screen. No one touches Zuko's glorious hair. For the record, his Book 2 hair was my favorite. Just a little on the shaggy side, with that smexxy spikiness in the front. Flame-o, hawtman.

Other than that, please mind your trigger warnings, be nice, be safe, have fun and happy January to one and to all! :D :D

Okay, for my part in the LoK thread, I'll start off a couple topics.

1. Bolin is the spiritual successor of Aang. This is not to say Korra isn't awesome, she is. But, Bolin, who is too often called Sokka Light, in the last two seasons showed far more Aanglike capacity to keep on caring despite heavy problems.

2. The second season is such a letdown because Nickelodeon gave Bryke the first season with the claim that it was only going to be one season (part of why they had to close the storylines so definitively), then surprised them with the second.

So, I'm all for Silver's idea of giving guaranteed two season runs (with early decisions to assess a third season), to give shows a good chance at building up an audience, rather than needing to be an instant hit.

I think the decision to do a filler episode in that middle of Season 4 has to have a really good reason...that I'm not aware of, but it was a sore thumb. Maybe it's a gentle reminder that our perception of reality is always different than reality. Bolin is actually the one closest to reality in his description, but he gets overridden by Verrick telling the movie version, which is apparently the better one, even though it had no reality in it. I think that's a pretty solid Take That at, say, a Hollywood movie adaptation of AtLA that doesn't actually exist, but was brought into our reality by a time crash.

Topic of discussion.

Considering that the topic really hasn't come up in the show, making either answer possible, should the story reflect Korra and Asami dealing with anti-gay bigotry or not?

I can see it either way, especially given that Avatarworld seems to be East Asian culture without European influences. But, do we prefer the fantasy of the Avatar bringing change to the world by forcing same-sex relationships into the forefront and fighting to end this bigotry or do we prefer a fantasy where this just wasn't an issue to begin with?
