Also, this is random, but I feel I need to be brave and finally tell you this: your icon is a dinosaur and you work in mail delivery in real life. Well, umm...I know you're a white New Zealander. But the real-life image I have of you in my head is that of a dinosaur in a mail delivery person's uniform. You even have the umbrella. 'Tis a cheerful image in my head, yes.

I am so embarrassed, but I had to share. @____@

You know, the umbrella would be a good idea to keep the sun off my easily-sunburnt skin... except I'd need extra hands to hang onto it :D

Post office uniforms here are red and neon yellow, for visibility. What uniform are you imagining? I'm trying to picture the US post office uniform and I'm getting... dark blue, with a hat? Or maybe that's the New York police I'm thinking of.

*googles* Nope, that's why I'm confused... your mail is delivered by people dressed like our police! Light blue shirt and dark blue pants.

So...you're a real-life mail delivery dinosaur in a bright red & neon yellow outfit. OMG, I love it! You are oh-so awesome!!!!

And...extra hands to hang onto it? Umm...don't you all have baskets and/or bags to hold all of your mail you need to deliver??? But then again, you still need both hands to actually give the mail to the person, LOL!

Oh yeah, I see! You all use bicycles over there to deliver mail. That sounds like pretty good cardio! Most of our mail people over here use mail trucks, err...or vans, if you prefer.

Also, if you don't mind me asking? I've googled, but I don't think I'm finding the right answer. Do you all have accommodations over there for mail people that are disabled/can't ride a bicycle to do their job? Or at least, are such accommodations enforced? :O

(And yaaaaaay for not worrying about sunburn. But booooh so much rain!)

When I applied for the job, the required qualifications were basically "good level of physical fitness, ability to ride a bicycle for x hours per day". So no, not really in this role. People with mobility impairments can work in other roles such as mail sorting. There are rumours of changes coming including using electric scooters/buggies for delivery, to allow travelling greater distances while carrying more parcels - but since they can't get right up to every letterbox due to terrain, there would still be a lot of getting on and off them and walking. So that's no solution.

I googled and found out that we have no specific legislation similar to the US Americans with Disabilities Act or the UK Disability Discrimination Act; there's just the Human Rights Act which mentions disability among other factors of discrimination. Interesting. I don't think a legal right exists to work in a job you're not physically capable of.

There are Deaf postal workers in the large branch nearest my town, and there's a sign language interpreter (another worker) who interprets staff meetings and announcements. New Zealand Sign Language is one of the official languages of New Zealand, along with Maori and English. So Deafness may have more protection than other disabilities.

I should find out more about this, especially as it pertains to people who have disabilities caused by work-related injuries... Thanks for asking questions and making me learn stuff!

Also...yeah, we have the ADA (Americans Disability Act) over here, but disabled people are still treated like incredible shit in the job market and in life in general. So, yeah, the ADA is there, but you'll of course find plenty of places where it's unenforced and even outright ignored. Yep. : /
