The answer is yes, yes you do need it and so here it is! I have watched this video and automatically become a better person because of it, I swear.

All sorts of neat things going on in there. I also still like the lottery idea, allowing people who would never be able to afford a Broadway musical to sit front row. I hope other shows apt that practice for themselves.

Oh, I know, right?! Lin himself has talked about how asininely hard it is to get a ticket to Broadway. And there have been a lot of good words written about how the Broadway big dogs (read that: the white men in charge of it) decided to make the ticket prices skyrocket for no damn reason other than that they feel like it, and so now theater is something reserved for the rich & privileged, rather than for the public as a whole.

So yes, the lottery is quite simply wonderful. :D

The Theater (basically anything above one's own school or community playhouse) has always been something reserved for the privileged and rich - they want no riff-raff mucking up their experience or accessing culture that should be beyond them.

Aww yeah, true.

I remember Lin always saying in interviews and whatnot that, for him when he was growing up, being able to go to Broadway was a "special occasion/treat" because they didn't have much money for tickets in the first place. And that's also how and why cast albums became so very precious to him and, thus, why he & the rest of the Hamilton cast took such great pains to create and make available the cast album (which Mommy blasts through the car whenever we're out and about! Heeee!)

But nowadays, a regular family like Lin's can't afford to go to Broadway ever because they've upped the price of tickets so, so much. That's true even if said family already lives in New York and, thus, probably doesn't have to worry about a hotel, food, transportation, etc.

Pretty much. Being able to take in a show is a sign of lots of wealth and the ability to save it enough to then spend it on the Broadway show (and anything done before or after).
